The long-run instrument behind the weekly read above: a fixed cohort of startups, compared week by week against the same base week, so adding companies to the tracker never moves it.

Healthcare startup hiring is expanding.

Of the 40 companies tracked since August 10, 19 are posting more roles than in the base week, 15 fewer, and 6 exactly as many, putting the Healthcare Hiring Index at 55.0 as of September 28, 2026 (+5.0 week over week).

How this report is calculated
  • Velocity is read from the job listings themselves: a role counts as new the day it first appears on a company's careers page and as removed the day it disappears, whether filled or withdrawn.
  • Listings first seen within 1 day of a company joining the tracker are its existing backlog, not new postings, and are excluded. A company only enters the 7-day figures after a full week of tracking and the 30-day figures after a full month.
  • Large job boards periodically re-list roles under new URLs, which inflates new and removed counts equally. Rankings therefore use net change; a company whose additions exceed 3x its open count a month earlier is treated as a re-list and left out of them.
  • The index is computed on a fixed cohort: for each week, only companies with a snapshot in both that week and the base week (August 10, 2026) are counted. New companies added to the tracker never move it.
  • Diffusion index = 100 x (companies with more open roles than the base week + half the companies with no change) / cohort size. 50 means as many startups are pulling back as ramping up.
  • Snapshots are resampled to one point per week (the last snapshot in each). A company-week whose open count exceeds 3x its base value is treated as a collector artifact and dropped.
  • Some early weeks are reconstructed from database backups; their per-company counts are read the same way but carry no role-flow detail.
